My goal before surgery was to be in the best shape possible to aid in recovery. I began eating low-carb, no refined sugars, doing intermittent fasting, shortly after starting pre-surgery orthodontics. I knew I would have about 6 months to prepare. I began a fast two days before surgery to help my body get primed for healing. I didn't eat solid foods for 3 weeks after surgery, which wasn't a big deal since I was already used to fasting by then. It is easier to work up to an extended fast, rather than going cold turkey. Fasting just means you drink delicious broths and liquids, it's not like you are starving yourself. I lost a few pounds after surgery (typical) but it wasn't a big deal.
The biggest deal was getting off sugars and inflammatory refined foods. I think fasting also helped lower my risk of post-op infection.
